Child,, I knew giving. I lost this grace by becoming civiliced. I was leading a natural life, whereas today I saw the artificial. The least pretty pebble was valuable to me. Every tree was an object of respect. Today, I admire the white man with a painted landscape whose value is expressed in dollars!
If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. I might have died, unmarked, unknown, a failure. Now we are not a failure. Thisis our career and our triumph. Never in our full life could we hope to do such work for tolerance, for justice, for man's understanding of man as now we do by accident. Our words — our lives — our pains — nothing! The taking of our lives — lives of a good shoemaker and a poor fish-peddler — all! That last moment belongs to us — that agony is our triumph.
If you are uncomfortable — in deep pain, angry, yearning, confused you don't have a problem, you have a life. Being human is not hard because you're doing it wrong, it's hard because you're doing it right. You will never change the fact that being human is hard, so you must change your idea that it was ever supposed to be easy.
