Hierbei denken die Rumänen an kopflose Holznägel, die früher für den Bau alter Bauernhäuser eingesetzt wurden. Wurde ein Nagel auf den anderen gesetzt, konnte so der versenkte Nagel wieder herausgeschlagen werden.
Benützt man in Rumänien dieses Sprichwort, so will man damit ausdrücken, dass Gleiches nur mit Gleichem bewältigt werden kann: Einer Leidenschaft kehrt man den Rücken, sobald man eine neue gefunden hat oder eine alte Liebe wird erst dann vergessen, wenn man sich erneut verliebt hat.
Das Sprichwort, so alt es auch sein mag, hat auch eine moderne Verwendungsweise gefunden: So wird es beispielsweise dann benützt, wenn jemand seine Arbeitsstelle auf die selbe Art und Weise verliert, wie er zu ihr gekommen ist (auf eine unehrliche Art also).
